5 Tips for Dealing With Impostor Syndrome

5 Tips for Dealing With Impostor Syndrome5 Tips for Dealing With Impostor Syndrome When I started at XO Group, I had just left my career in investment banking. I would often tell others how lucky I welches to snag the CFO role, and I would promise my family, friends and former colleagues that, once Id racked up a few years in the role, Id finally be the real deal. Looking back, I realize that was impostor syndrome talking. Now, after almost four years at my job, I recognize that the CEO, mainboard of directors and employees were excited when I was hired as their new CFO. I got the job because I deserved it I had amassed the necessary experience - and, moraover, I was up to the task. While Im confident in the workplace today , that wasnt always the case. Over the years, Ive held many different jobs - from administrative assistant to research analyst and, later, from venture capitalist to CFO. In each of these roles, Ive had moments where Ive felt completely unqualifie d or overwhelmingly doubtful about my chances for success. These moments were paralyzing and extremely stressful. If youve convinced yourself that your accomplishments are only the result of dumb luck, of course youre going to feel like a complete fraud. And when these feelings begin to consume your everyday thoughts, impostor syndrome can seem impossible to overcome. The good news? Youre not alone. Its estimated that 70 percent of people will experience at least one episode of impostor syndrome . Even renowned American author John Steinbeck confessed in a 1938 diary passage I am not a writer. Ive been fooling myself and other people.Life is hard enough without having to inflict more pain on yourself. Simply put, give yourself a break Put one foot in front of the other and tackle each obstacle, issue, and fear with the mindset that youre learning and growing with each new day. If ridding yourself of the nagging impostor syndrome seems difficult, you can beat the blues by trying the b elow tips.I love people, and I love to laugh. So, I try to bring that joy to my day-to-day dealings. I try hard not to fit into a specific mold or live up to an arbitrary standard that people may have of me and my role. Essentially, I am branding my own take on my role, and that is very freeing.Theres no point in pushing yourself in isolation. Very little gets accomplished all on your own. Instead, surround yourself with people who are great at what they do, and encourage them to tackle big challenges. And be sure to take the time to learn from them as well.Appreciate and acknowledge your achievements - no matter how small - when you wake up each morning and before you go to bed at night. Every day before I leave for work, I write down my goals and plans for the day - what I want to accomplish and how Im going to do it. Before I turn in for the night, I recap the wins Ive had, what Im grateful for and what I learned that day. The key is not to dwell on the negative, but inste ad to see how losses can become learning experiences for the future.Theres no better way to continuously remind yourself of your expertise than to become a mentor . In helping others, you can share what youve learned throughout your career, which in turn will increase your own sense of self-worth. Its amazing what a 30-minute chat with a mentee can do for your confidence.Im grateful to have found a boss and team at XO Group whom I can be honest with. Our company culture inherently helps diminish impostor syndrome by promoting productive conflict, encouraging constant feedback and making sure that everyone in the room has a voice. Were constantly challenging each other - in a positive way - and were great at picking each other up if at first we dont succeed. If you work in a toxic environment , its no wonder if youre paranoid. Start positioning yourself now to transition to a more positive and encouraging company.Ultimately, we all want to get better every day. Use that mantra as motivation so that you can celebrate your achievements, take your mistakes in stride and accept the fact that your work will never be 100 percent flawless. And truly, thats OK. And when the worst happens, try to remember that the sun comes up every 24 hours, giving you another shot at a great day. This article was originally published on DailyWorth . How to Hire Passive Job Seekers

How to Hire Passive Job SeekersHow to Hire Passive Job SeekersThe labor market is still tight. Sitting back and waiting (and hoping) for the right candidates to apply to your job postings is not an effective way to staff your openings. You need to be proactive. Being proactive includes targeting passive job seekers. These are professionals who arent sending out resumes but would be open to switching roles if an enticing opportunity came along. Passive job seekers arent responding to job ads. They arent even looking at job ads.But passive job seekers represent some of the most promising candidates available. They often have in-demand skills and, through their current roles, are continuing to build new ones. If you want to give yourself the best shot at finding the right fit for your opening, passive job seekers need to be parte of your hiring equation. You cant hope to identify and potentially recruit passive job seekers if you are, to put it bluntly, passive. You need to take the init iative by identifying and contacting passive job seekers yourself. Here are strategies that can help you do just thatBuild your brandYou want passive job seekers to think of your organization as a place theyd love to be once theyre ready to pursue a job change. So, start building your brand as an employer of choice. There are several ways to do so. Post photos of happy employees on your firms social media accounts. Run an ad in an industry publication that mentions your companys recent appearance on a best place to work list. Attend job fairs, professional association meetings and even charity events so your firm becomes a recognized name in your local market.Ill be honest It takes time. Theres no way to build your brand quickly. But if you begin the process now, eventually your organization can become a target destination for workers looking for something new.WE CAN HELP YOU HIREUse social media as a sourceSocial media can be a nice starting point for spotting passive job candidates . LinkedIn offers paid tools that allow you to search profiles based on various criteria to find people with the qualifications you seek. And you can send messages to people youre not connected to in order to start building a relationship.Keep in mind, though, that, in most cases, it takes both time and trust to convert a cold contact into a potential hire. The people you reach out to may be unaware of your company and not consider it a possible destination for them. More importantly, it may require a good deal of convincing for target candidates to understand why they should leave a stable role for a new opportunity they know little about.Work with a recruiterWorking with a recruiter can make the process of identifying passive job seekers much easier. The best recruiters have cultivated a rich pipeline of passive job seekers through their networking efforts and by placing professionals in jobs and keeping those connections alive over years, even decades. In fact, many job seekers w ork with recruiters specifically to hear about interesting employment opportunities without having to launch an actual job search. In addition, recruiters understand what certain candidates desire in a new job and what it would take for them to switch roles. A good recruiter can quickly identify passive job seekers who would seriously consider your opportunity and help position your role so it appeals to these professionals.Be prepared for a counterofferOne of the toughest parts of recruiting passive candidates can be sealing the deal. After all, to land these already-employed professionals, you have to convince them to leave a job that they are more or less happy in. And, of course, the persons current employer isnt going to be happy to hear a valued employee is about to walk out the door.If you do make a job offer to a passive job seeker, be prepared that the persons employer will make a counteroffer in an attempt to keep the employee on board. This is another circumstance where a recruiter can be helpful. Since recruiters have expertise at negotiating job offers, they can highlight the benefits of the position youre offering so the candidate feels confident moving forward with you. Earn $10,000 for tasting the best BBQ America has to offer

Earn $10,000 for tasting the best BBQ America has to offer Earn $10,000 for tasting the best BBQ America has to offer It’s been more than a year since a group of twenty-somethings in Spokane, Washington took to Craigslist in search of a “BBQ Dad” for Father’s Day Weekend in 2017, but it turns out that a new job also requires that you have a similar passion for grilling.Reynolds Kitchens  recently announced that it’s looking to bring “its first-ever Chief Grilling Officer” on board for two weeks and will give them a $10,000 stipend.  The person who locks down this position will reportedly be responsible for tasting and  taking pictures of “some of the most delicious grilled dishes from across the country” in cities known for their barbecue. They will post what they learn on the Reynolds social media platforms and website. But the CGO won’t have to hit the road alone - they can bring another person along for the ride, and the company will provide both people with “pre-paid travel and lodging.” Reynolds ultimately wants someone who can provide “the best grilling techniques and tips.”Is the smoke from a thousand grills already calling your name? You have until August 13 to submit your application, so you better  act fast.

Why universal basic income costs far less than you think

Why universal basic income costs far less than you think Why universal basic income costs far less than you think Want to get rid of poverty, lessen inequality and provide financial stability in a world of precarious work? Well, why not simply give everyone enough money to ensure basic sustenance? This is the deceptively simple solution proposed by advocates of universal basic income (UBI). Just transfer enough money to everyone, every month, to guarantee a basic livelihood. The policy is universal and unconditional (you get it no matter who you are or what you do). This means no bulky bureaucracy to administer the program or onerous reporting requirements on the poor. Nor do you have to wait to file paperwork to benefit: whether you lose your job, decide to strike out on a new career path or take time away from work to care for a family member, the money is already there. But the UBI movement has a major problem: both critics and even many supporters don’t understand how much the programme would really cost. To calculate the cost, most people just multiply the size of the monthly income (say, $1 ,000) by the population (it’s universal, after all) and â€" voil â€" a number that seems impossibly expensive. But this is not how much UBI costs. The real cost â€" the amount of money that actually needs to be taken from someone and redistributed to someone else â€" is just a small fraction of these estimates. The key to understanding the real cost of UBI is understanding the difference between the gross (or upfront) and net (or real) cost. Here’s a simple example: imagine a room with 15 people who want to set up a UBI for the room of $2 per person. The upfront cost of the policy would be $30. The ten richest people in the room are asked to contribute $3 each towards funding it. After they each put in $3, raising the total $30 needed, every person in the room gets their $2 universal basic income. But because the ten richest people in the room contributed $3, and then got $2 back as the UBI, their real, net contribution is, in fact, $1 each. So the real cost of the UBI is $10.Esti mates that just multiply the size of the UBI by the population of a country do the equivalent of claiming that the cost of UBI in the room above is a whopping $30. But the real cost in this scenario â€" the money redistributed from the wealthy â€" is only $10.The billionaire’s dilemmaIt’s important to understand who will be gaining money through a UBI and who will be contributing to it. The common mistake is to double count the net contributors. Yes, they get a UBI, but in contributing to the UBI pot they first return their UBI, and then throw in some money on top of that. So it’s incorrect to count them when calculating the true UBI cost. This is a fundamental point that often gets missed: those that are taxed to pay for the UBI will get some of that cost back â€" by getting their UBI. You can also think about it in reverse: while the UBI goes to everyone, the rich in effect give it back in the first chunk of taxes they pay, so you don’t need to count their UBI in cost estim ates. This also resolves UBI’s “billionaire’s dilemma” â€" why give someone like Bill Gates a basic income? The answer is that Gates would simply return that UBI through his taxes â€" and help pay for others. But if Gates becomes suddenly destitute, the UBI will still be showing up for him to use every month. And since his tax bill will drop, he’ll become a net beneficiary rather than contributor.True costsAny UBI estimate that just multiplies the size of the UBI by the population is a red flag that the cost has been over-inflated. A true cost estimate will always discuss who the net beneficiaries will be, who the net contributors will be, and the rate at which we gradually switch people over from being beneficiaries to being contributors as they get richer (this is sometimes called the claw-back rate, the withdrawal rate or the marginal tax rate â€" which is not an overall tax, but simply the rate at which people start to return their UBI to the communal pot as they earn m ore).Cost estimates that consider the difference between upfront and real cost are a fraction of inflated gross cost estimates. For instance, economist and philosopher Karl Widerquist has shown that to fund a UBI of US $12,000 per adult and US $6,000 per child every year (while keeping all other spending the same) the US would have to raise an additional US $539 billion a year â€" less than 3% of its GDP. This is a small fraction of the figures that get thrown around of over US $3 trillion (the gross cost of this policy). Karl’s simplified scheme has people slowly start contributing back their UBI in taxes to the common pot as they earn, with net beneficiaries being anyone individually earning less than US $24,000 a year. This point still holds if you’re raising money for UBI from other sources than income or wealth taxes. If you use a corporate or data tax, or a natural resource or carbon tax to finance a UBI, you are still redistributing money that would otherwise ultimately be profits that go to Google shareholders or BP executives. And you’re taking less away from them than you would think â€" because they too get a UBI. So the money they end up losing through the new tax is offset by the UBI they receive. The same holds if you’re paying for a UBI by reshuffling your budget. Some people get confused and question whether UBI is really universal if only a portion of the population actually ends up with extra income, while another portion pays for it. But any policy that is universal yet redistributory works this way. Public transit, roads and schools are all universal benefits, but some people pay a lot for their funding through their taxes, while others enjoy them for free or at a lower cost.In light of the huge benefits available from a UBI, it’s a waste of time to argue over wildly inflated cost estimates. The numbers are out there â€" we can pay for a basic income.Elizaveta Fouksman, Leverhulme Early Career Fellow, University of OxfordThis articl e was originally published on The Conversation. How to Get More Attention From Employers

How to Get More Attention From Employers How to Get More Attention From Employers Job seekers can get noticed by employers when they follow these three attention-getting tactics.Of course, today’s job market is trying. Though there is stiff competition out there, successful candidates are persistent in unearthing potential job leads. In last month’s article, ” How to Romance Your Next Employer,” I outlined three key elements for a successful job search campaign: Focus on employers who can appreciate what you offer. Identify a positioning that attracts attention. Differentiate yourself as a first-choice expert. It is not enough just to open doors, get referred and deliver an impressive value proposition. You’ve got to network purposefully. Don’t count on being remembered; take initiative and be intentional about who you speak with.Once you have an effective plan, you’ll be ready for the next three implementation tactics that use networking purposefully, as follows:1. Demonstrate a short learning curve. When you make contact directly with hiring authorities, the easiest way to gain their trust and cultivate their support is to demonstrate that you can solve challenges. They will be relieved to know that you will contribute immediately without a learning curve. Don’t dwell on all the company’s challenges. Do develop a meaningful dialogue on ways to solve their challenges to unearth possible opportunities. Don’t ask hiring managers to explain the market. Do your research, and know the market. 2. Out of sight is out of mind.Be patient. Polite, persistent, pings avoid missing out on an unexpected opportunity. Remember to give to your connections by offering your resources. Suggest relevant references online or in traditional media. Out of sight is out of mind, so don’t drop out. Bring people with mutual interests together to spur conversations. Don’t only be a taker. Do pay it forward: give assistance, bring people with mutual interests together and look for ways to help others. Don’t ask about job openings explicitly when scheduling an appointment to talk Do attract employers’ attention by seeking advice and information.3. Reach out to those who decision-makers hold in high regard. Reach beyond employees at your target companies and connect with authors, key industry figures, academic thought leaders and others to whom hiring managers may go for a recommendation. Be inventive. Seek relationships with suppliers, vendors and consultants affiliated with your target employers. Don’t expect to instantly find these third-party thought leaders. Do count on working hard to cement new relationships and keep up with existing connections. Don’t only network with decision-makers who may be busy or inaccessible. Do access leads indirectly through suppliers, vendors, consultants, former co-workers and others. Persevere. Networking purposefully is the very best strategy for making connections. Regularly accessing and assessing a large number of high quality contacts produces results: referrals, leads and, most importantly, offers.

5 Ways to Make Mentoring Meaningful to Millennials

5 Ways to Make Mentoring Meaningful to Millennials 5 Ways to Make Mentoring Meaningful to Millennials In many respects, millennial finance and accounting professionals aren’t much different from their baby boomer and Generation X counterparts. They want to be treated with respect and recognized for their contributions on the job. They value professional development and career advancement. And they want the opportunity to maintain a healthy work-life balance.   Millennial professionals also have some different expectations about their work experience. For one, they seek continuous training and feedback. Meeting those expectations can be a challenge for busy managers. But a mentoring program that pairs seasoned employees with millennial staff can help finance leaders ensure team members from Generation Y and Generation Z are receiving the one-on-one attention and guidance they seek.   These arrangements must be well-thought-out and relevant, however, if they are to have a positive and lasting impact on millennial employees - and on those who are serving as mentors. These five tips can help you develop a mentoring program that will be meaningful to everyone involved: 1. Allow mentees to share opinions and ideas freely Millennials tend to view company leaders more as colleagues or partners than bosses. For them, a meaningful mentoring relationship is not top-down, where they are empty vessels ready to be filled with knowledge. Rather, they want to be heard.   So, when establishing a mentoring program for millennial accounting and finance staff, look for mentors who are comfortable with a flatter hierarchy. Also, encourage them to give mentees plenty of opportunities to offer feedback and make suggestions for improvement. 2. Shake up the routine Variety is the spice of the mentoring life. That’s why mentors need to think about ways to move beyond conversations and identify opportunities for their mentees to engage in hands-on learning.   For example, millennial mentees could shadow their mentors for a day. Or, they could observe senior-level meetings to understand what goes into executive decision-making. Mentors could also introduce or connect their protégés with other leaders and influencers in the company or invite them to business networking events to help them enlarge their circle of contacts.   Assigning projects to mentees that will help them to stretch their abilities and develop their business acumen and big-picture thinking is also good practice. Just make sure they already have the core skills (and the time) to take on any special assignments. 3. Keep it alive Effective mentoring requires regular interaction between the mentor and mentee. But after the initial few meetings, it can be easy for both parties to let the mentoring relationship slide. People get busy. And as workloads rise and deadlines loom, mentoring relationships can get pushed to the back burner.   So, be sure to encourage mentor partners to check in often with each other through in-person meetings, phone calls or video chat. They should also follow a structured schedule for touching base, at least initially. For added motivation, you could make such meetings - both scheduled and impromptu - a metric on which staff members are evaluated during performance reviews. 4. Set an ‘expiration date’ While some mentorships can last for many years, most have a formal ending. It’s a good idea to determine up front how long the formal portion of a mentoring relationship will last.   Typical mentorships run from three months to a year. In some cases, the relationship will end earlier - either because it wasn’t productive for one or both parties, or because the objective was met ahead of schedule. The mentor should jot down notes about what aspects of the relationship worked well and what did not.   During the final meeting, celebrate all that the mentee has learned and, if appropriate, make sure their achievements receive broader recognition at the firm. 5. Explore nontraditional arrangements Everyone is familiar with the classic mentoring relationship in the business world: an experienced employee helps an up-and-coming colleague to “learn the ropes.” However, you might want to break with tradition and consider having millennials mentor their Gen X and baby boomer colleagues.   Reverse mentoring can be empowering for millennial workers because it allows them to share their fresh insights, social media savvy and more. Peer mentoring, where colleagues who work at similar levels in the company pair up to share professional feedback and advice, can be rewarding, too.   Serving as a mentor also gives millennials the opportunity to refine soft skills, such as communication, and develop their leadership abilities. (In a recent survey by our company, 38 percent of CFOs said the opportunity to build leadership skills is the greatest benefit of being a mentor.) Help everyone on your team to grow Even though their work styles, preferences and expectations may differ, baby boomer, Gen X and millennial professionals generally seek the same things: to have satisfying careers, to be allowed to work to their full potential, and to be compensated appropriately for their contributions.   Keeping those core needs and aspirations in focus will help you to manage every employee on your accounting and finance team more effectively and ensure that every worker has an opportunity to learn - and share their knowledge.

Crafting an Eye Catching Email Cover Letter

Crafting an Eye Catching Email Cover Letter Crafting an Eye Catching Email Cover Letter A good cover letter might mean the difference between getting the interview … and having your resume quietly moved to the “no” pile. Crafting an effective cover letter is tricky: in a limited amount of space, you need to catch the hiring manager’s attention, make a case for why you’re the best candidate for the job, and inspire them to contact you for more information. It’s a sales pitch, which means that you have to get in, get them interested, and then get out while they still want to know more. If you’re like most job seekers, you don’t write many letters these days, which makes cover letter writing even tougher. Cover letter templates take the guesswork out of structuring your message, while also ensuring that keep your message concise and to the point. Use this email cover letter template as a guideline to create customized cover letters for potential employers. Then review a formatted email cover letter example, cover letter samples, and email message examples to get ideas on writing your own cover letter. Email Cover Letter Template Subject Line: Job Title - Your Name: List the job you are applying for in the Subject Line of your email message so that the employer knows which job you’re interested in. If the employer asks for the subject line to delineate specific information, follow those directions exactly or your email may be automatically discarded. Salutation: Its critical to write to a specific person rather than falling back on Dear Sir/Madam, which looks lackadaisical, as though you didnt make an effort (and that doesnt reflect well on how much effort youll put in on the job!). Do your research to determine the proper contact name. Body of Email Cover Letter: The body of your cover letter lets the employer know what position you are applying for, why the employer should select you for an interview, and how you will follow up. First Paragraph:  The first paragraph states why you are writing. Mention the position you are applying for and include the name of the contact if you have one. This is the grab, your chance to grasp your reader by the collar and get his attention. Offer some specific, focused information regarding the job youre seeking and a few core strengths that demonstrate suitability for the position. Convince the reader that he should grant the interview or appointment youre requesting. Be clear and concise regarding your request. Middle Paragraphs: The second paragraph describes what you have to offer the employer. This is your hook where you highlight examples of the work performed and achieved results. Draw on your key competencies from your resume, though dont copy it word for word. Bullet points in this paragraph are effective in drawing your readers eye to your successes. Make strong connections between your abilities and their needs. Mention specifically how your skills and experience match the job you are applying for. Remember, you are highlighting your resume, not repeating it. The third paragraph details your knowledge of the company. Show that you did you your research and understand something about the business and the ways in which you can contribute to its mission. Conclusion: This is your closing. Summarize what you would bring to the position and suggest next steps by requesting a meeting or suggesting a call. Mention that your resume is attached if thats the case, and conclude by thanking the employer for considering you for the position. Include details on how you will follow-up. Signature: Include your name, full address, phone number, email address, and LinkedIn Profile URL, if you have one. Sample Email Cover Letter (Text Version) Subject: Sales Manager - Robert SierraDear Mr. Brooks:My colleague Kathy White suggested that I contact you regarding the position of sales manager you have open at ABC Publishing. How to find and land an entry level job after college

How to find and land an entry level job after college How to find and land an entry level job after college The time right before and after college graduation should be an exciting one, but most students find themselves in a panic. Winter isn’t coming, but real life definitely is. While landing an entry-level job doesn’t have to be hard, it does require effort. Students better be ready to network, build their public profiles, and perfect their resumes. Ladders answered some of the major questions that students and recent grads usually have regarding entry-level jobs. What is an entry level job?“I think of that entry-level job as a springboard,” said Heidi Robinson, director of career education and training at Wake Forest University.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! While there are exceptions, an entry-level job is usually not someone’s dream job, but a starting point to work one’s way to their ideal position. Robinson thinks of an entry-level job as an extension of one†™s education; it’s an opportunity to learn, get paid, and understand how to make an impact for an employer.“I say it’s a first destination gateway entry-level opportunity,” said Bob Martin, the assistant dean for internships and career placement in the Bellasario College of Communications at Penn State University. “And I’m intentionally redundant about this.”Martin defines an entry-level job as an opportunity rather than a job because it is the position you take directly after graduation that opens doors to opportunities in your career. It’s not always a full-time job, but it is always a step in the right direction that may open doors for the rest of your career. How do you find entry-level jobsJob boards are a great starting point to discover what entry-level jobs exist in your industry. If a job’s seniority level isn’t labeled, candidates can use context clues to tell if a job would be fitting for them. Most entry-level jobs list no experience needed, but some m ay say one to two years of professional experience required or preferred. While job sites and online tools can be handy for researching and applying to opportunities, they are usually highly competitive.“Once you go to those digital resources, you’re a number,” Martin said. Instead, both Martin and Robinson recommend using your network to excel in your career search. How to network in your field as a student or recent graduateWhile many students have only been taught how to network at events like job fairs or conferences, networking can actually be done largely online, which is good news for the Gen Z population that was raised on technology.Upcoming or recent graduates may not have many allies in the workforce they’re attempting to break into, but weak ties can’t be overlooked. Weak ties are people with whom you have some sort of affiliation, even if that connection is weak.“People with whom you have weak ties are sometimes those who have the greatest impact on your caree r trajectory because they have access to jobs that you don’t see in your inner circle of friends,” Robinson said.Robinson explains how to network online using tools like LinkedIn.How to use LinkedIn to find your alliesLinkedIn allows you to find your weak ties with a few clicks of a button.Steps to find weak ties on LinkedIn:Find your college or university page Choose the alumni section Find the “Where they live” section Select the geographical area in which you’d like to work Find the “What they do” section Select the industry in which you’d like to workWhen you scroll down, you’ll find a complete list of individuals that went to your school, work in your desired industry, and live in your preferred geographical location. Why people should be a part of your job search strategyInstead of networking, Robinson prefers to train students in relationship building. While job boards can be successful, candidates that rely solely on them miss out on the “hidden job market.”Between 70 and 90% of jobs are landed through relationships, Robinson said, which means that only 10 to 30% of opportunities are actually posted online.Instead of only submitting resume after resume, Martin recommends using a comprehensive job search strategy that includes people as well as online resources.People should be the largest part of your strategy, according to both Martin and Robinson.“The number one strategy for any new grad is to have multiple conversations a week with people you don’t know very well an d ask them about their path and advice they have,” Robinson said. “That’s how we’re going to uncover the hidden job market.”How to network and build relationshipsMartin suggests creating a list of each professional that you know in your industry. Once you have your list and contact information, it’s time to reach out and see if they’re available for an informational interview. If you’re able to get in touch with the contact, face-to-face interaction is best. You should ask if the contact would be available to meet for lunch or coffee. If you’re unable to meet in person, ask if the professional is available for a 10-minute phone call.“Remember that you’ve got nothing to lose by asking somebody for a 10-minute phone call,” Robinson said. It’s important to note that the purpose of this interview isn’t to ask them for a job but to seek advice from them about the industry and your job search strategies.“If we only reach out to our allies and ask them to help us get a job, we have reduced relationship building down to a binary function,” Robinson said. Your contact can only answer yes or no to that question.  There’s nothing powerful about having a transactional relationship.” Instead, building a relationship can be beneficial to both you and your contact, whether those benefits appear immediately or somewhere down the line.Use this informational interview email sample to guarantee that a professional industry contact agrees to speak with you.How to ace an informational interviewIt’s important to remember that the purpose of an informational interview is to learn more and build a relationship with an industry professional, not to land a job. Keeping that in mind, early questions in your interview should focus on the professional’s career.  For a list of specific questions to ask, read our story on 18  questions to ask in an informational interview. If the contact is only able to give you 10 minutes of their time, it’s a good i dea to keep the conversation focused on them for the majority of the discussion. Within the last few minutes, ask for their advice in your job search and if it’s okay with them to keep in touch. If your contact agreed to an hour in-person meeting you can talk about their career path for the first 30 minutes. Learn how the contact landed her entry-level job and how she got promoted to where she is today. About halfway through the interview, try to switch the conversation towards yourself. You should tell the professional about your experience, give them your resume, present them with your e-portfolio, and outline your job search strategies.  After each step, ask what he or she recommends doing differently.Leaning into the resources of their universityUniversities often provide job search resources to students and recent graduates. For example, Wake Forest provides students access to Simplicity and Handshake up to 6 months after graduation. Upcoming graduated should contact their car eer services department to see what types of tools are available to them for their job search.Post-grad internships can be entry-level jobsWhile many students are looking to land a full-time position directly after graduation, Martin emphasizes the importance of considering an internship position after graduation. Commitment is not as common as it used to be, even in the professional world. Many companies like to see how candidates fit in at an office before hiring them as a full-time employee. The upside is that you as an intern also get to judge the company atmosphere before committing to a full-time position. Not only does an internship give you the chance to gain skills, knowledge, and experience from a company, but it also gives you the chance to test-ride a certain position at a specific company. If that company is unable to hire you at the end of that internship, the experience you gained only makes you more marketable to the next company. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
